Building Community Partnerships with BCPL and CCBC

   

 

 

Objective: Secondary LMSs will be able to brainstorm and identify partnership ideas they can implement with their BCPL branch and nearest CCBC campus during the 18-19 school year in order to promote student lifelong, 24/7 learning.

 

 

 

Agenda:

     Lauren will share things she has done in partnership with the Essex BCPL librarians  and CCBC librarians in order to get participants' ideas flowing.

     Participants will brainstorm as a group on the session Padlet.

     Participants will share ideas they plan to implement or have implemented already.

 

BCPL Ideas:

 

1. Have an in-person meeting with the Educational Liaison from your local BCPL branch.

 

2. Develop an Action Plan. Here's an example (some of the pieces about the SAIL card no longer apply)  Kenwood High and BCPL Essex Branch Partnership Plan 2016.docx

 

3. Identify teacher(s)/programs (AVID) who are willing to lend their classes for a lesson with BCPL librarians.

 

4. Make a connection to curriculum. For example, we had a year where every 9th grader was in an Effective Habits class and one goal was to have them learn about different careers, so part of the BCPL visit involved the librarian telling their career path story. Child Development students had a field trip to Storyville.

 

5. With your liaison, develop an interactive BCPL database activity for kids to do as the librarian is showing all the resources they have available. BCPL has criteria and an approval process so they actually design the assignment and ask for input. Here's an example:  BCPLLessonHandoutUpdated (1).docx

                   Make sure the kids have access to their student id number (Hopefully teachers can retrieve this information by class in Schoology as they were able to in Engrade). Create directions to share with teachers.

 

6. Have various handouts available for students such as How to check out eBooks from BCPL (handout may need to be updated) and the Student Account brochures Directions to Check Out E-Books in BCPL.docx Student_Account_Brochure.pdf 

 

7. Request that your liaison emails you their library's schedule of events each month and display in your library.

 

8. Remember to invite your branch librarians to various events at your school. Think beyond Back-to-School Nights. For example, Kenwood had librarians who interviewed students during Senior Mock Interviews and a librarian who came to our celebration of a Kenwood student who is a published author. The BCPL branch has author panels so they are now connected with our student author.

 

9. Actively promote the teacher resources such as the teacher collection as you collaborate with teachers. Use the teacher collection for your book club books.

 

10. Use the BCPL databases as resources as you curate for lessons/projects.

 

CCBC:

*Take IB/AP/GT students on a field trip to do research for a specific project. 

 

*Partner with CCBC librarian to provide library services for CCBC courses being taught in your building.
